Del reviews 3 of his favorite video games for Sega Saturn & Sony PlayStation in this original web feature that first appeared in 1997.
What made the Hieroglyphics.com website special during the mid-1990s was, in large part, its direct access to members of the Hiero Crew. So when Del the Funky Homosapien, an avid gamer at the time, wanted to do video game reviews on the website, of course we were going to make it happen.
In total, Del did 3 video game reviews for the website: Tobal 2 for the Sony PlayStation, Fighter’s Megamix for the Sega Saturn and Toshinden 3 for the PlayStation.
The reviews were conducted over the telephone in 1997, with Del calling an answering machine so that the conversation could be recorded. This was, of course, at a time when internet speeds were very slow and video chat was extremely uncommon. In fact, streaming audio was only just becoming “a thing” with the introduction of RealAudio which was how these interviews were originally streamed on the website.
Fun fact: While Hieroglyphics.com’s webmaster, Stinke, conducted the game reviews over the phone, Del actually dialed into the answering machine of music producer, Blockhead, who was a close friend of Stinke’s and had access to the hardware to record the conversation while he was living in New York City.
For convenience, I have collected the 3 game reviews below and converted them into video format for a more accessible, modern experience.
