Happy
Birthday Hiero Dot Com |
|
Turning
4 years old today, Hieroglyphics Dot Com finally reaches
senior status on the world wide web.
While fulfilling a community service requirement to go camping
with "problemed" inner city youth in 1995, I had
the crazy notion to begin a web page. Not even 17, I came
home from the trip, and got cranking. A few days later "tHa
tHreshHolD" was born.
Started by myself and fellow graf writer Scarface Tha Divine,
the site was split into 4 sections: A graf page, a video
game page, a links page and my very own little Hiero page.
The site went live on August 16th 1995 after about 1 week's
development.
tHa tHreshHolD's video game section was the only section
of the site to generate a considerable amount of hits, given
Playstation's release was only a mere month away. The Hiero
site, lucky to score more than 20 hits per day, lingered
on as did the remainder of the page. At the time, Hiero
had been in a state of seclusion; fans did not know what
was going on, myself included, and so there was no new news
to report, leaving the then "Unofficial Hieroglyphics
Web Site" to simply act as a database of what limited
resources I had (thanks Mercer). The entire site lasted
little more than 1 month and on September 9th 1995 I decided
the site would be terminated. But not before I saw the Goats...
Back in Philly on September 9th 1995, The Goats were performing
at the TLA so myself and fellow homies Taf and Emcee Mic
Meech were back at my crib preparing to go. Literally on
our way out the door, my pager goes off and I decide to
return the call (given the page's '510' area code which
was unfamiliar to me at the time). The phone picks up and
I'm greeted by someone claiming to be Tajai of the mighty
Souls of Mischief crew!? He continues to tell me that I
had dispensed my pager number to him in an email and that
he was interested in making the site "official".
Prior, I had received tons of false email from all kinds
of people claiming to be members of the Hiero. Now these
fools were actually CALLING ME?! It was too wild for me
to fathom, and I began to pass the phone around the room
to see if they could identify the phone's voice as the Authentic
Tajai.
I get the phone back and begin to break it down: "Alright
peep it: Mad people claim they are you" I said to "Tajai".
"You're gonna have to send me something as proof".
He agreed, the address was recorded and the phone hung up.
It made for great conversation on the way to the show, all
three of us laughing hysterically at the notion of it being
true. The entire ordeal was forgot.
Fast forward 2 weeks and my senior year in high school was
now in full swing. I cut skool one afternoon to visit my
P.O. BOX. Much to my utter amazement, a JIVE Records press-package
is steady chilling, waiting for me to dive in! I dash back
to skool and locate my friends like "Look at all these
stickers!!" It was wild. I called "Tajai"
back, confirmed delivery of the package, said I was down
and the rest was history. One month later, "No Man's
Land" dropped (October 10th) and with it, the remainder
of the Hiero Crew to be signed to a major label.
And thus began the independent voyage of the Hieroglyphics
Crew.
4 years old and growing....Thanks to EVERYONE down with
the site whether you've been visiting for 4 years or 4 minutes!
The page has gone through more than 8 different cosmetic
designs, some of which I have bits and pieces of. I'll try
to make a virtual museum and post it up as a feature. And
remember, NONE OF THIS -- This site, 3rd Eye Vision, Phoney
Phranchise, etc......-- could have happened without your
viewing of these web pages! That's on the real. More soon.
Thanks again! Happy Birthday.

Notes
from Domino: Both Sides Too Big? |
I got
a minute to speak with Domino regarding where he and Del
were with "Both Sides of the Brain". As the above
news bit hints at, the album has been sequenced and is nearing
full completion. Don't let it fool you: Those are 17 FULL
tracks; not no skits or mini songs. In fact, track 4 ("Pet
Peeves") is really 3 songs in one, as Del goes off
about 3 little things that bug him. Del had so many songs,
they couldn't all fit on a Compact Disc's allotted 74-Minute
time stamp. Not only will "Both Sides of the Brain"
be longer than "3rd Eye Vision", but it will use
up the entire space on a compact disc.
The album will be made on cassette, compact disc and vinyl
on Hieroglyphics Imperium through yet-to-be-named distributors.
Matt Kelly was again engineer extradonaire with Domino acting
as executive producer. The album was recorded in a new studio
(new to Hiero, at least) called "30/30 Studios"
based in San Francisco, California.
The single drops August 3rd. Look for the album in the Fall.

Great
Day In The Bay Follow-Up |
|
From
DaveyD:
Folks came out in force for two Bay Area Hip Hop gatherings
this weekend. First we had 'A Great Day In The Bay' project
which took place at La Pena Culture Center. This is a non
profit endeavor spearheaded by Jamal Williams of Bay Area
Productions which brings all the hype concerts to town,
Damu Daily who is a local promoter and spoken word artist
and Taje of Heirogliphics Crew [sic]. They wanted to bring
forth an event that featured Bay Area rappers positively
expressing themselves and showing a commitment to stop the
violence. A Great Day In The Bay was not only a dope concert
where scores of artist came out in support, but it's also
an upcoming documentary that will be released sometime in
late August or September through the Academy of Arts. Prior
to the event many of the artist went over and showed their
support for the on going struggle to reopen community radio
station KPFA. After shutting down two major streets in B-Town
[Berkeley], artist like Dwayne Wiggins of Tony Toni Tone,
Zion I, J Crow, Oakland Africans, 7ODZ, Omalara, Natural
Fact, Black Dot Collective, Myran, Malia, Navotta, Tracey
Bartolow and Rap Attack featuring Magic Mike and Rhyming
Reg to name a few came through and got busy Friday Night.
For folks outside the Bay Area who may not be familiar with
all these groups, these are acts that specialize in ripping
dope lyrics and given the opportunity will gladly battle
those who step to them. In short the represent the lyrical
side of the Bay Area's thriving Hip Hop community. Props
to the organizers of this event for stepping up and making
stuff happen.

LATE
BREAKING NEWS - SOULS / QUANNUM VIDEO |
|
Ironic
just last night I watch Return of the Jedi, only today to
learn that Souls of Mischief and the Quannum emcees (Latyrx,
Blackalicious, etc.) filmed a video for their new single
& 12" "The Extravaganza" in the same
forest where the Ewoks live. Actually, it's the same forest
that Lucas shot the finale of the aforementioned movie;
a Redwood Tree reserve in Northern California called The
Muir Woods. Filmed at night, the video was shot in infrared
(!!). Details are thin at the moment. I'll try to pick more
up as it comes to me. Thanks to Kenneth for the leak.

HIERO
CHAT ROUND-UP |
|
On Thursday
night over 100 heads came through to chat live with the
Hiero Crew online, courtesy SOHH
and TWEC. To kick off
the chat, members JayBiz, Opio, Tajai, A-Plus, Domino, and
myself were all present, with Casual & Del running a
little behind and PepLove on tour in Australia. Heads were
able to send their questions directly to the crew, who would
then select certain questions to be answered. A lot of ground
was covered, with the crew fielding questions about their
new projects as well as possible collaborations with the
Living Legends crew, what the crew currently had bumping
in their tape decks (a unified "Slick Rick!" could
be heard from the entire crew), as well as talk about yet
another Hieroglyphics/EA Sports teamup, Hiero's upcoming
porno flick and a Casual & Soul Coughing matchup?
Del made it to the chat a little late, but better than not.
The remainder of the chat seemed directed at Del concerning
his new record, what he's been up to, what Dreamcast games
he's been enjoying and in particular, his current thoughts
on hiphop.
A transcript of the chat will be made available within the
next couple of days so stay tuned. Thanks to everyone that
came out to the chat and thanks to SOHH and TWEC for their
"Sizzlin' Summer Series" of live online chats.
Next week: Mountain Brothers and Kool Keith.
peace....

The festivities will be kicking off @ La Pena Cultural Center,

spoken word and more; all of whom reside in the Bay Area.
The event will be recorded live with possible surprise guests.
Everyone come out!

DREAMCAST |
Well,
not to sound like a boisterous punk but I have it, nea-neah...What's
the point? Well, besides the fact that it's dope as phuck,
Del has one too. Did you know that when the Dreamcast drops
in the U.S. September 9th it will include a 56K modem? That
means you can not only check out your favorite website in
the comfort of your own living room (www.hieroglyphics.com)
but you could also conceivably call up Del's Dreamcast and
battle him online in a game of Street Fighter...Sound tempting?
I should also mention this all pertains to the 12"
cover of "Phony Phranchise". Hmmm.....

PHRANCHISE
WITH A PHRAN |
|
I
was brutally attacked this morning by Karen in the Hiero Office
for spelling Del's single wrong. Apparently the single is
entitled "Phony Phranchise" as opposed to "Phony
Franchise" which we reported on earlier. Dictionaries
have been notified and I sit licking my wounds (thanks, k-nastee) |

PHONY
FRANCHISES ERECT CASTLES |
|
Hieroglyphic
mastermind, Del the funkee homosapien has leaked key information
regarding the first single to his much-anticipated 4th album,
"Both Sides of the Brain". The 12" single is
entitled "Phony Franchise" and is produced by Del
himself. The B-Side goes by the title "Press Rewind"
and was produced by Domino. A remix for "Phony Franchise"
is slated for the single as well, with most likely Domino
picking up the reigns on production (although at press time
the song has yet to be recorded). The 12" will be published
under Hiero Imperium Records by an as yet unnamed distributor
and currently has an official release date of "soon".
Ask this webmaster and he'd say look somewhere closer to late
July. We'll have more as it teeters out the camp. |
|
WHAT
THE PHUCK? PHUCK IS THIS SHIT?! |
Word,
you peeped the layout changed a little bit, right? I opted
for this on some meanwhile cause it'll be easier for me to
quickly update the news page as it seems to be pouring in
more voluminous (?? haha) as of late. So stay content on this
for a minute as we take an additional year to update the site. |
|
NEWSFLASH:
DEL FREES TIBET! |
Well,
sorta kinda, but not quite maybe? Del will be performing at
this year's Tibetan Freedom Festival taking place in Chicago
June 12th-13th. Alongside the funkee one you can find Automator
and--you guessed it--Prince Paul. Peace to Snuffalufugus who
participated in Prince Paul's "Pretty Boy Modeling School"
infomercial to debut later this Summer. El-P shaking his ass
on the Cat Walk??.... |
|
DEL
PLAYS WITH ATOMIC DOGS & MACHINES |
Rumor
out the camp states Del will be recording wih Parliament/Funkadelic
legend George Clinton in a track to be produced by Rage Against
the Machine! Perhaps harking back to the days of "Judgement
Night", we may be in for a big ole treat. Word on this
one is scarce, but I'll look after it. |
