Saucee RosenJake Begins: I got a call from Domino. Del was set to perform at the Sega Dreamcast release party in two days. I packed my bags and drove up from LA mid week. I put in a call to Tr? C and Miss Tea who are the graphic designers for the new Del album, "Both Sides of the Brain", and told them to show. Since Alex was off the Porn shoot for the week I stole his camera and invited him along. I met up with Domino before the show began and took some shots of the setup. We played NFL 2K and I observed Dom do the soundcheck. It was a pretty elaborate layout, theme and all. I used to work for Sega back in the DAYYYYYY, so I was very stoked to see that they turned it around and were really cashing in (Landstalker is my favorite Genesis game).

Anyhoo, people started to pack in. The food was good, the beer was free, I was in heaven. Del showed up with PERFECT timing (in the sense that if he was any later it would've been ALL BAD) and he and K-U checked out the scene. I did some pre-performance interviews of the two very juiced Sega Loyalists and they proceeded to rock the mic for an ever-growing crowd. I introduced Alex to Stinke (I pointed to the tall dude and waved my hand ferociously in front of my face as if to shield a bad smell... thus "stinke." Get it?)

Anyway the liquor flowed MAJOR and I don't quite remember the whole night although I do remember bumping into an old skate pal Tom Stratton who is now the sports critic for Gamers Republic. Big Ups to GR!!!

Stinke and KennyK were in the house rocking the Hoopla love, but were no match for Alex's and My pursuit for White Castle Burgers and Power Exchange. Domino and Del barely made their flight to San Diego for the Tradeshow concert. Alex and I, barely made our flight for Vegas. Del came out strong with the first stop on the tour, by the time he played The Whiskey in LA the show was much better, but still D-E-L!

Stinke Continues... I was online doing my daily working routine and called the Hiero Hideout to see what was popping. Speaking with Karen, she casually mentioned Del was going to perform at the Sega Dreamcast launch party in 24 hours. "WHAT???!" I just happened to be chatting online with fellow Hooplaite KennyK who mentioned he was already going to the Sega Dreamcast party despite the fact that neither of us even knew Del was going to perform. Kenny, who was still pondering the trek to the launch party, cemented his invitation when I passed on the Del news. It was too much for me to fathom: Del performing at the Dreamcast after-launch party? Myself not only a major Del fan, obviously, but a loving, devoted Sega loyalist couldn't pass up the chance to see this. I checked with Kenny to see if his floor was available for sleepage, he confirmed, and I was off to the airport to book a flight to San Francisco. Call me crazy; I smoke crack..Neah!

Timing was ridiculously tight; everything was very last minute. I managed to get cheap airplane tickets and my flight was less than 6 hours away. I received a pardon from my family to miss my birthday party and was off to the airport to sleep until my flight was called.

I got to the party, had a mild altercation with security as all authority figures usually have with Stinke (or vice versa) and was inside, marveling at the spectacle that was the re-born Sega. The setup was off the wall with kiosks setup everywhere to play all the new games, and a massive Dreamcast Brain a la the television commercials hung ominously above the open-bar. I peeped out Domino and Del for like a MINUTE before they went on stage. PepLove was in good fashion as well, performing shit like "Undisputed Champs" to a crowd who at the time was small but growing exponentially. Khaos Unique--Del's boy who rhymes on and produced the song "Proto Culture"--was along as well, having concluded their show with the aforementioned song. "Proto Culture" is a track from "Both Sides of the Brain" all about video games and you could hear spontaneous "whoooooooooooos!" and "yeeeeeeeeeeas" from the crowd as Del and K.U. paid verbal homage to video gaming's might.

It was a wild night, and only the beginning, as we got reaaaal sloppy via the open-bar and post-show escapades. Anyone ever see a Sloppy RosenJake? I have! It was a fantastic time and Sega really pulled no stops. It was the day after the Dreamcast launched in the U.S. (September 10th, 1999) and Peter Moore, Sega's Vice President, made the announcement halfway through the party the exact dollar amount raised during the Dreamcast's 24 hour launch period: $97,904,618.09. Sega is the shit.

"Proto Culture" Lyrics
By: Del the Funky Homosapien & Khaos Unique

Chorus: Let me tell you about the Proto Culture
If you don?t know the culture, here?s the whole structure
We?ve had enough of the lackluster-trust us
We get the kind of games you can?t rent at Blockbuster

KU: Game related, raise it bit by bit
Yo D, link up the cable we?ll go hit for hit
Phantasma plasma particle beam means I have ya
on the run-the rendered effects hot like magnas

Del: I play games by Capcom with a power glove strapped on On any platform, I don?t spend my dough on Phat Farm
Video games, I got many to play
Before my life expires; fufill my desires

KU: Mastering your hardest boss
Shattering all stars across
Ain?t hard to cross the finish line
Floatin? on Daytona
Wex, Gex or Kloana, we get ?em all at cost
RPG, Platform we transform like Macross

Del: Rival schools, Batsu
Purchase you ought to
It came with one free CD, it?s like I bought two
I hope they make part II for Dreamcast
?Cause games I?ve seen in mags, you won?t believe they have!

KU: Getting callouses turning over asteroids
Graviton bombs destroyed
Getting moms annoyed
Now I?m hacking Nightmare Creatures
Their features splattered across the screen
It gets more clean each year

Del: I remember my homie Ed Coats had the most
A Colecovision-every week I?d visit
Playing Donkey Kong Jr., Venture, Rock and Rope
Games I thought was dope
While my moms was watching soaps

KU: I?m on the next level
I got a double barrel shotgun in the Doomworld
Waiting on the next devil
Armor?s low-check the arsenal
Rupture the main conductor playin Disruptor

Del: I remember Ninja Gaiden
Finished finally
With Ramone wouldn?t answer the phone
This was before getting blown
I own the first Nintendo Power
With the maps of Zelda Help me conquer in an hour

Chorus: Let me tell you about the Proto Culture
If you don?t know the culture, here?s the whole structure
We?ve had enough of the lackluster-trust us
We get the kind of games you can?t rent at Blockbuster
(2X)

Del: Hey KU you know my SEGA collection is massive
Got all the past hits and classics
Herzog Zwei now Panzer Zwei
Originality that made me a fan today

KU: It?s Pandemonium-it?s like Toys R Us
Flippin the next Saturn game brings out the boys in us
It?s poisonous
Taking out the boys in blue in Grand Theft Auto,
Snatch a Rolls Royce to use

Del: Yeah, I?ll admit Playstation improved
Come visit Feudal Japan with me and Tenchu
Bushido Blade 2 with sword play so accurate
Mega Man Legends but I had to buy a map for it.

KU: I fence Hyo to get a Neo-Geo
For Samurai 64 in full rendered splendor
Rival counter and enter my sword in his innards
My joint was being Leonardo wuppin? on Splinter

Del: I gotta get Xenogears-that?s the type of game that relieves my fears
Get it from overseas to here
I gotta get Psychic Force
Authentic arcade that I can endorse
They got me liking imports

KU: I?ll need to be at the next E3,
What?s the next CD I need to see
Me and D signing checks
Let?s float overseas, mingle with game companies
Giving tips to Capcom and Sega-you can?t front on these

Del: To anyone who knew me better
Know I chose Saturn first Cause it?s 2-D heaven
Bernie Stolar dropped the ball with the RAM cartridge
X-men Vs. Streetfighter could?ve expanded the market

KU: Marvel Vs. Capcom-beyond fathom
Tell the truth, Playstation ain?t ready to have ?em
Come on I?ll bring the onslaught
Alpha and Omega
Khaos Unique brought to you by SEGA.

Chorus: Let me tell you about the Proto culture
If you don?t know the culture, here?s the whole structure
We?ve had enough of the lackluster-trust us
We get the kind of games you can?t rent at Blockbuster
